Devotional Guide for Friday, May 17

Titus 1:10-16

Reflect

Imagine being the captain of a ship containing a group of people. As you sail off on your adventure, you’re bound to encounter large waves that crash against the ship, and treacherous rocks and reefs that you’ll have to avoid if you want to stay alive.

As you continue on your adventure, you notice another ship filled with people, but as you get closer, you realize that the people are pirates dressed as seemingly harmless passengers! It’s your job to remain vigilant and discerning of what is actually true.

Paul warns Titus of the dangers of the false teachers found in Crete who are sowing disruption in the community with their false teaching. Titus must sharply, boldly, assertively rebuke these teachers for teaching information that is defiling the minds of the community.

In the same way, we must also exercise discernment and courage when we encounter teachings that are counter to the gospel but claimed as saving truth. Specifically in a time where truth is up for grabs, as followers of Jesus we must remain vigilant as truthbearers.

Apply

Reflecting on your own life and beliefs, how do you discern truth from falsehood in teachings that you encounter, whether in church, online, or elsewhere?
