James 1:19-27
Reflect
Have you ever counted how many times a day you feel anger? Did you know that anger is often a coverup for the deeper emotions we feel, like rejection, insecurity, and fear? What if every time we felt anger bubble up, we stopped to consider what else is going on inside us? One of my mentors used to ask me “What’s driving the bus here in this situation?” which was his way of asking what thoughts and emotions were pushing me to make certain decisions. Invite the Holy Spirit to shed His light on your heart. Knowing what is going on inside allows us to apply God’s Word to our circumstances, becoming a doer not just a hearer.
James tells us that self-deception occurs when we are not intentional in our actions. Aristotle said, “virtues are formed in man by his doing the actions.” The 20th century writer Will Durant interpreted it this way: “You are what you repeatedly do.” What are your everyday actions that add up to the totality of your life? Is every action in alignment with who you perceive you are? Most importantly, is every action in alignment with the Word of God? By faith in Christ, we are His children (Gal. 3:26). Fully be God’s child in all that you do. May people say of you, “they’re just like their Father!”
