James 2:1-13
Reflect
Throughout church history the relationship between the rich and the poor has been difficult to say the least.
It is very likely that you are, and certainly I am by global, standards the rich. The other day I was coming alongside of a fine brother in Christ as he was determining God’s will for his next steps. Having choices is certainly an identifying mark of being rich.
As I come alongside many that were forced to flee their home, many consider themselves rich as others did not have the option to find rescue. It is likely that if you saw where they now call home, you might consider them poor.
Increasingly our stream of Christianity is awakening to the realization that following Jesus involves a lot more than having our sins forgiven to go to heaven. The teachings of Jesus are primarily focused on helping the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalized. Jesus was never swayed by the splendour of the powerful, He did have a special place for the downtrodden. Then, as now, Jesus lives with the poor. Sure, I like to think Jesus can be found in a mansion, but He can definitely be found in the shelter, the refugee camp or under the wreckage of war. He is with those that show mercy to those that are run over by the wheel of the rich; as well as those that step up with courage and put a stick in the spokes of that same wheel.
Will you confess the sin of favourtism? What will be your next move in caring for those that others dismiss?
