James 3:1-12
Reflect
Viruses are quite fascinating! On one hand, viruses play a significant role in strengthening our immunity towards certain viruses. There are some viruses that can enhance drought tolerance for plants to be resilient against harsh weather conditions. Some viruses play a significant role in destroying bacteria which can be a natural alternative to antibiotics.
Yet the opposite is also true. Viruses can cause diseases that lead to serious health conditions, pandemics, and possibly the loss of life. How can something so small cause so much harm? Our tongue or speech is no different.
There is a duality to our speech whether we’re cognizant of it or not. We either have the choice to use our speech for blessing or for cursing; for the building up or tearing down of others; for the glory of God or the defilement of God.
However, if we consider what James is teaching in the last couple verses of this passage, there can’t be inconsistency for the believer. If a spring can’t produce both fresh and salt water, the growing and intentional believer can’t produce words that are both a blessing and a curse. Even though the tongue may be small, it has the capacity in every way to build up others.

How has your speech been either a blessing or a curse to others?
