James 3:13-18
Reflect
Who is the wisest person you know? What is it about them that makes them wise? Is it the words they say or the life that they live?
Paul asks this question as well. He asks, “Who is wise and understanding among you” (v13)? James gives us the answer to the question of what makes someone wise in this same verse – “let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” Being wise, as it turns out, isn’t just about words. It shows up in how we live our lives.
James then gives us two different kinds of wisdom: wisdom from above and wisdom from below. He gives us a way to examine our lives and what kind of wisdom we have. Wisdom from below looks like holding bitter envy and selfish ambition in our hearts. Wisdom from above is pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
