2 Peter 1:1-4

Reflect

Growing up, my father used to tell me stories of his service in the Vietnam War: stories of sleepless nights, eating rations, grenade explosions, walking through wetlands as gunshots were being fired, and much more. Everything necessary for his survival was given to him.

When they decided to flee Vietnam, they were on a small boat with several hundred others fleeing the country. Shoulder to shoulder, with only the clothes on their backs, they needed to somehow survive. They made friends; they made enemies. With what they had, they needed to make it through to the next destination.

Sometimes in our faith, we think we need something miraculous, supplementary, or “the next thing” to help us along, and sometimes God does use those means. However, God has already given us everything we need for “life and godliness (v.3).” It’s through the knowledge of Jesus and His precious and great promises that we share in God’s holy nature. His word, through the power of the Holy Spirit, is what ultimately changes our hearts.

The more we come to know Jesus Christ personally, the more we grow in our understanding, and the more we can appreciate the divine power and promises that aid us in growing spiritually. We have everything we need to live a godly life and to live it to its fullest.
