2 Peter 2:1-16

Reflect

Peter tells us that there will be false prophets among us and that “many will follow…” There is no shortage of accusations and warnings being hurled against different camps declaring who is promoting heresy. The truth is, we might not recognize a false prophet. In order for someone to “secretly introduce destructive heresies,” much of what they speak will be truth. It will sound good, appeal to our senses, and be popular. We can’t simply look to one camp, one denomination, one side of an issue and think “if I stay away from that, I will be safe from false teaching.”

Friends, let’s take an honest look at ourselves and acknowledge we have our own biases and blind spots. Let’s lay down our self-protection tendencies because they are self-focused and not God-focused. Let’s let God be God for “the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgement.”

Peter tells us that heresy involves denying the Sovereign Lord. Are there ways we deny Christ and don’t allow Him to be Lord? Consider this “Lordship Prayer” from Desert Streams Ministries: “I invite and submit to your Lordship in every area of my life… Lord of my time, my work, my pleasure, my sexuality, my home, my family, my possessions, my finances, all my relationships and all of my plans, hopes and dreams.”
