2 Peter 2:17-22
Reflect
In my journey with cancer, I have encountered countless “false prophets”. Plentiful are those whose teaching is attractive as they promise what it is that all of us desire – freedom. We are addicted to methods that promise everything with little, or preferably, no inconvenience.
Peter comes on strong throughout this chapter about how we must awake and reject the false teachers that look so immensely appealing with their convincing charisma.
If I had to answer concisely about what Jesus is about, I would say in one word: freedom. Jesus goes the distance for us to receive freedom like no other. No more living with guilt or shame. Freedom to be filled with the manifestation of God within us.
The problem isn’t that we are free to do whatever we want, the problem is that we keep drifting into weak desires which attempt to be satisfied with lustful sin.
Jesus frees us to the abundant life and clearly identifies that this narrow road includes struggle.
It should not surprise us that, then as now, there are false teachers. The false teachers lure us into a life of ease which leads to a life of corruption and enslavement.
How do you prevent the drift of allowing yourself to be easily satisfied with a mediocre spiritual life?
What does the next step of living courageously and compassionately look like?
