Philippians 3:1-7

Reflect

There are so many things we can be tempted to put our confidence in. We can put our confidence in our jobs to provide for us. We can put our confidence in our homes or the things we own to give us security. We can put confidence in our own strength or in the good things we have done for others.

In this chapter Paul boldly exclaims that it is we who believe in Jesus that boast in Him and put no confidence in the flesh. What is he referring to here? In verse 2, Paul is warning the church to watch out for those who were pushing circumcision as a requirement for salvation. Paul is reminding the church that we are not saved by fleshly acts, but by Jesus, and should put no confidence in the flesh.
He then goes on to name quite an impressive list of why he could have confidence in the flesh: he did everything right, he followed the law to the letter, he was zealous for God. But he has confidence in salvation through Jesus Christ alone.

Apply
Take a moment to think through areas in your life where you may be placing confidence in anything other than Jesus.
How is Jesus inviting you to place your confidence in Him?
