Devotional Thought for Tuesday, December 16

Luke 2:10: “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.'”

Have you ever looked forward to anything good? Can you remember what that felt like? What did you do to prepare?

I remember anticipating the Christmas holidays as a child in boarding school. I counted down the days, and feelings of excitement built in and around me as the last day of school drew nearer. I prepared by packing my luggage, making plans with my friends, and dreaming about Christmas celebrations with my family. When the last day of school finally arrived, my heart and body filled with joy as the final school announcements concluded and we headed home for the holidays.

In Luke 2:10, the angel of the Lord appeared to the shepherds, warning them against fear and bringing tidings of great joy. Notice the order of events in the verse. First, they were told not to be afraid, then to expect good news, and lastly that good news would bring great joy.

In this season of advent where are you on your journey? Do you need encouragement against fear? Do you need a reminder of the good news promised to us by our Lord? Or are you in a season of great joy? No matter where you are, remember that the good news and joy thereof is promised to all people and we have no cause to fear.

Where is the Lord leading you to let go of fear in your life?

How can you prepare your heart to experience the joy promised by God today?
