Devotional Guide for Wednesday, March 15

Mark 14:53-65

Reflect

You have faithfully journeyed with Jesus all through this fast-moving Gospel. You have read and reflected upon the times He quietly started His ministry. You have been with Him when He healed the sick, taught the multitudes, raised Lazarus from the dead, comforted the hurt, challenged the godless authorities, was restored through prayer-filled solitude, and we read yesterday how He allowed Himself to be captured and led away. However, today’s passage is even more captivating. In a pathetic sputter of desperation, the Jewish religious elite muster up dubious incongruent testimonies from an assortment of opportunists hoping to leverage some favour for themselves. Finally, Jesus evidences the only testimony that will advance His own death is one He Himself will need to supply. In His one statement, He provides what is required to be accused as a false prophet (religious) and self-declared king (political). Jewish and Roman authorities now have something they will be forced to do something about. The Jewish leaders then do what someone does when they have nothing substantive; they resort to high hysterics. How are you like Jesus, being faithful in the midst of a pitiful culture? What needs to be done in order for you to fulfil the God-given destiny in your life?
