Devotional Guide for Friday, August 19

2 Chronicles 34:14-33

Reflect

When King Josiah heard the Book of the Law being read to him, he became very troubled. With a strong conviction, he sought word directly from God.

According to Huldah the prophetess, Josiah was right--judgement waited for the people. But Huldah also revealed that Josiah’s heart of repentance was real and he would not be subject to what was coming. There’s such a contrast here: the heart of the nation did not match the heart of their king.

I think we can resonate with that as people who are a work in progress! There are days where our heart does not match the heart of Jesus our King, and we may come across as people whose lives have yet to be changed.

But instead of finding a scroll to tell us how we can be in right relationship with God, not only do we have the whole canon of God’s word, but the law has also been written on our hearts through our faith in Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit. We can tell from the story of Josiah that God forgives and blesses those who decide to turn away from their sins.

How does the posture of Josiah and his character towards God encourage you in your own relationship with Jesus?  Is there anything in your life you’d like to turn from today?
