Acts 2:42-47
Reflect
This is a beautiful image of what a biblical church looks like, not only during the time of the first century, but every century that follows afterwards. From what we observe in Luke’s writing, a biblical church is marked by the teachings of the apostles, fellowship with one another that reflects the Lord’s commandment (John 13:34-35), a full meal with the Lord’s supper, and prayers that exude worship.
The lived and loved together through the voluntary sharing of possessions with one another as the direct result of their own relationship with God (v45).
But what’s striking about this text is that the early church was faithful in meeting together day after day: eating, praising, giving, and sharing life together. In a world that has been individualized and privatized, which has been further enhanced by the pandemic, the biblical way of living is completely counter cultural to our current way of living. What was normal for the church then is not as normal now.
Apply
Through understanding that they had everything in common, ultimately found in Christ, and the expression of radical worship and generosity, many were saved.
How does having a shared and common life in Christ draw those around you to the message of Jesus in an individualized and private world?
What parts of your day-to-day life are still privatized that require a culture change?
