Genesis 12:1-4

Reflect
In Genesis 12, we read the calling of the Lord on Abram and Sarai’s life. They are obedient to begin an epic journey--leaving their home, their security and all that was familiar. They did not know where the Lord would lead them, they only knew where they could not stay. And the purpose? For blessing. To be blessed, and to bless the whole world. But notice that blessing was costly for Abram and required an act of faith. Abram was 75 years old when he received this call, and 100 years old when Isaac was born. God’s timing of blessing didn’t necessarily match up with Abram and Sarai’s expectations. (See Gen 16.)

Blessing can mean favour with God, but it also means “to impart life.” God would give life to Abram and Sarai - a shocking promise to a barren couple – and through them give life to all people. This promise is ultimately fulfilled in the gift of new life through Jesus Christ. We are the recipients of blessing because of Abram’s obedience.

Apply
Today, where do you long to be blessed; to see the restoring life of Christ at work? Ask the Holy Spirit if you need to be obedient in some way. Are you willing to pay a cost, to lay down your will, that God’s will may be done, and blessing can flow? Reflect on Psalm 1.
