John 2:1-12
Reflect
Running out of wine would’ve been a social disaster and disgrace! Wine was symbolic of celebration and joy! You might be thinking, “How would they possibly run out of wine?” Wedding celebrations in the first century would sometimes last a week. Food and drinks were a major consideration for everyone’s enjoyment, and the preparation was not as easy as running to the nearest supermarket.
It’s astonishing to note that Jesus used the water jars for ceremonial cleanliness to perform the miracle. The traditions held by the Pharisees and elders were for outward cleanliness like washing their hands before eating, but they were never for an inward cleanliness – the lack of change in the person revealed the lifelessness of their religion. In their context, it’s almost as lifeless as a wedding without wine.
Who would’ve thought that this would be the exact moment and opportunity for Jesus to demonstrate, with absolute clarity, His divinity? Christ displayed His glory and divine power! The result of this miracle was faith (v11). In other words, life.
Apply
God has made countless miracles, but the one that stands above the rest is found in the death and resurrection of Jesus. It’s through Christ and His blood that gives us life and joy.
How does God’s display of His glory and divine power through Jesus encourage you today?
