John 2:13-25
Reflect
In today’s story we see Jesus’ passion on full display as He clears the temple of those that were changing money and selling animals. These were people that saw an opportunity to take advantage of foreigners and the poor, and make a quick buck. Instead of being a place of worship, they had turned the temple (specifically the Court of the Gentiles) into a place of profit and oppression that couldn’t be further from worship. The exorbitant costs that they were adding were specifically becoming a barrier for poor to be able to engage in worship.
While there might not be the same kind of marketplace in our church lobby, it begs the question: is there anything we’ve added to worship that is a barrier for someone being able to engage? And what might Jesus have to say about it?
How is Jesus inviting us to examine ourselves and further purify our worship as we launch into this new year?
