John 4:27-42
Reflect
One commentator calls this scenario, “The cry of a new life.” There is so much in this passage that speaks to that:
1. The woman of Samaria had come to draw water, but after her encounter with Jesus, she was so elated that she completely left her water jar and went into town.
2. There was no recording that she went to the well with someone else – she was alone at the well, most likely, as a social outcast.
3. By coming face to face with Jesus’ knowledge of everything about her (v.29, 39), she asks the question, “Can this be the Christ?”
Imagine this woman’s day! She had come to the well like any other mundane day to draw water.
There was a need, thirst, and desire that needed to be met. But instead of her physical needs being satisfied, she encountered the living Messiah who was able to fill her need with a desire for life that she was not expecting to be met that day. It was infinitely more substantial than water!
It was through this encounter that she became a witness and declared the truth about Jesus Christ to others. Many were brought to faith.
