John 6:16-24
Reflect
In 2019, the self-help culture and industry was worth $11.6 billion. That’s right, billion! Everything from books flying off the shelves to some highly popular Instagram posts – it’s all about self-effort and having a positive mental attitude towards yourself to be the best version that you can be. I imagine those numbers being even higher 4 years later coming out of a pandemic.
In times of distress, who do we turn to? Do we turn to the book on the shelf or the positive Instagram quote on our phones? It’s easy to receive instant gratification from what’s easily accessible, but there is no eternal satisfaction to gain because life is full of ups and downs. A quick fix is short-lived and hurts more than it heals.
Looking at our text, one commentator writes, “The requirements for help in their distress were simple enough – recognize their own need and take Jesus into the boat.”
However, it’s one thing to recognize their need, and another to take Jesus into the boat. Seeing our need for God is one thing, but we have to take Jesus into the boat of our lives in order to calm the distress. This means we require faith to help us see that Jesus has greater authority over the distress.

Looking into your current circumstance, where is faith required in order to see God’s work?
