Hebrews 5:11-14
Reflect
Our son Judah is currently 11-months old, and we can barely keep up with the kid! He’s active, adventurous, and he gets into all sorts of places he shouldn’t get into. He started transitioning to solids after his two little teeth started to peek out from his bottom gums. If he was unable to walk and eat solids 17 years from now, I think any person would be quite concerned if he fell off the path of his normal development.
The readers of Hebrews were not developing in their maturity towards their understanding of God’s word and pursuit of righteousness. They should’ve been teaching and instructing matters of righteousness and faith, but they were still learning their elementary ABCs! They were still getting absorbed in issues only baby Christians should be concerned about.
It's true – infants need their milk. Their bodies have not matured to the point where they’re able to take solid food, but mature adults need more than just milk. This is essential because solid spiritual food helps us discern between truth and falsehood (v14) especially in a world of religious diversity.
Apply
In what ways are you actively deepening your understanding of the gospel and God’s word? How might this equip you as you enter conversations of faith with people of different religious or non-religious backgrounds?
