Hebrews 8:1-13

Reflect

The primary point of the letter of Hebrews is concisely and clearly written in v.1, Jesus is our High Priest. He is also the mediator of the new covenant. This agreement is so much more than a legal contract. Jesus does what He does so that we can delight in God’s ways, God’s people, and most of all, so that we can delight in God Himself.

Verses 8-12 are a quote from God to the poet prophet Jeremiah. The poetry is a lament and a promise spoken by God. One of Jeremiah’s most important contributions is that he becomes the expressive voice of the suffering. The role of the prophet is always to stand as an advocate for the oppressed. The advocate role is crucial in the ministry of the Gospel.

Most of us hold positions of privilege. As such, as saints living in the freedom that comes with the new covenant, Jesus calls us to raise our voice on behalf of the unborn, the poor, and the oppressed of our culture. Lament is essential to knowing the heart of God, and the heart of God is always for the oppressed.

Pray: My Father in Heaven, I am a broken person who acknowledges my sin, and desperately desires full healing of my mind and heart. I confess that I could be the voice of the oppressed more passionately. Heal me and grant me grace to repent and proclaim your gospel of freedom to “the least” and “to the greatest”.
