Hebrews 11:32-40

Reflect

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). The passage for today continues from yesterday, highlighting the people that walked by faith in the Old Testament. Those that believed God would do what He promised, even though they didn’t see it happen in their lifetime. Today’s passage puts a spotlight on those who endured.

Through faith, some conquered kingdoms, shut the mouths of lions, and became powerful in battle (v34). Others continued to have faith through suffering, persecution, and death. All the people listed believed God. They believed He would do what He promised and give them a Messiah. They endured great and terrible things because they had faith. Even though they didn’t see this promise fulfilled in their lifetime, they still had faith that it would.

We HAVE received the promise! We have been given new life through the completed work of Jesus on the cross.
