John 20:19-31
Reflect
We have come a long way together as we have journeyed through the unique Gospel of John. Way back in January, Pastor Mike launched us as he wrote about the “Word becoming flesh”. It was a little mysterious then. Along the way, “I AM con carne” teaches, models, and promises about a life like no other, even boldly proclaiming an abundant life. At times pointing to eternity, but most often revealing that He is speaking of life right now, right here.
In this Gospel, Jesus models “The Way” as He abides with the outcast Samaritan woman, heals an outsider’s son as well as heals many of society’s “unclean”, and paying the consequences of being hated by those that held privilege and power in the culture. And then modelling true leadership by humbly receiving a foot washing by Mary of Bethany (a place of misery, and likely outcasts), and then serving those entrusted to Him by doing likewise. There is never any mention of remaining predictable.
John is immensely clear in verse 31 about why he wrote this entire Gospel. It is all about believing that Jesus meant all that He said, but not just believing. Rather that, through believing we would “have life in His (Jesus’) name”. The Life that is truly Life is never about being safe and comfortable. The Jesus Way is always about lives being transformed into the fullness of Christ, whatever it takes. What is your next step in truly following Jesus? Pax Christi.
