Devotional Guide for Friday, April 28

Genesis 8:1-22

Reflect

There’s a lot to read in today’s passage, but let’s zero in on three words that can easily be missed:  "God remembered Noah...".

This is a short, but wonderfully powerful sentence. During seasons of joy, celebration and blessing, it’s easy to acknowledge that you’re seen and heard by God; it is much more challenging to know that you’re seen and heard by God during times of difficulty and challenge.

Noah was in the midst of living in a culture of rampant sin and violence. The marathon of injustice and bloodshed was too much as God’s created design for humanity had been ruined and defamed, yet Noah remained faithful. As the flood narrative continued, it’s easy for us to think that God had seemingly forgotten about Noah. After all, doesn’t remembering imply that God had forgotten about him?

The Hebrew word leans closer to “calling to mind” or “being thought of” in the same sense that greeting cards write, “remembering you on this day”. In other words, God is calling to mind and thinking actively of Noah and the covenant that was made with him in Genesis 6:18. Our God is unable to forget the promises that He makes with His people – how amazing is that?

Apply

In your current season, how has God’s remembrance of you, and His promises towards you, brought encouragement for today?
