Genesis 31:1-21
Reflect
What is your experience of being in a situation that is highly dysfunctional? For some it is a business relationship, for others it’s their church, and sadly for many it is their family.
Today’s passage is layered in dysfunction in almost every relationship. No one trusts anyone, and the major players are deceiving one another for their own advantage.
Can we not make this passage about genetic breeding practices?
It may not seem like a big deal for Jacob to return home; but recall that he has been away for 20 years. Everything has changed. He came single, and is leaving with, well, not so single at all. Two of the ladies that he fathered children with have never left their home. Jacob is returning, but the sisters are leaving the only home they’ve ever known.
Have you ever done that? It’s hard.
How have you specifically changed in the last 20 years? Are you listening for God’s leading?
How are your actions impacting dysfunctional relationships?
Home is not just a building; it is personal relationships. Loved ones make a place a home. There are people in our church and neighbourhoods that need a home. They need someone to love them.
Who will you go and lovingly welcome?
