Colossians 1:9-14
Reflect
What does it take to please God? Do we need to know everything there is to know about the Bible? Do we need a strict adherence to the law? Do we need a rapture-like or spiritual awakening experience to please God? The false teachers were deceiving the Colossians with this teaching! It was important for them to figure it out, but it’s also important for us, so that we don’t succumb to the same errors.
What pleases God?
1. Bearing fruit in every good work – good works is a by-product of our salvation.
2. Growing in the knowledge of God – His character and expectations help us in our conformity to what pleases God.
3. Endurance and patience – passing through challenging experiences with trust, and growing in long-suffering with others.
4. Gratitude – joyful thanksgiving for God and His blessings.
The list is not exhaustive and for good reason, or else we may fall into the temptation of carrying out actions without first considering the state of our hearts, and the motivation behind it all.
