Psalm 34:11-14 & James 3:17-18
Reflect
How many times have you thought or said, “I just need some peace and quiet!” With a houseful of boys and a large dog, I know I have. This phrase connects peace with tranquility, but there is so much more to it. In our theme of peace this week, what words stand out to you as you read these passages?
I see the words “turn,” “seek,” “pursue,” and “sow.” These are actions words. Our passages today about peace reminds me of the description of a “peacekeeper.” This is how the UN defines it: “Peacekeepers protect civilians, actively prevent conflict, reduce violence, strengthen security and empower national authorities to assume these responsibilities.” They are bold and courageous going into active conflict. A peacekeeper does not cover up conflict, but they are willing to do the work of acknowledging where there is suffering and injustice with a focus on facilitating peaceful resolution and restoration. The Message translation of James 3:18 reads, “You can develop a healthy, robust community that lives right with God and enjoy its results only if you do the hard work of getting along with each other, treating each other with dignity and honour.” It is important to note that we seek and pursue peace as God’s Word defines it, not as we would like it to be.
