Devotional Guide for Thursday, December 14

Psalm 85, Luke 1:67-80

Reflect

As I sit down to write this, one website reports there are 32 countries currently experiencing some form of conflict. Each of these countries and their citizens are without a sense of peace.

Psalm 85:8 says, “I will listen to what God the Lord will say; he promises peace to his people, his saints…”. The word peace in this verse is thought to be taken from the priestly blessing in Numbers 6:26 – “the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

The people hearing this blessing understood the word peace to not be just the absence of war or trouble, but a positive state of rightness and well-being.

I am thankful I live in a city, province and country that is relatively peaceful. I wonder sometimes if our living in a place that doesn’t challenge our sense of wellbeing weakens our reliance on God to grant us peace that passes all understanding. Peace that helps us navigate the situations that make no sense. May it be for you today that the Lord turns his face toward you and gives you peace.
