Devotional Guide for Friday, February 9

Matthew 10:1-16

Reflect

There is so much to say in this passage from everything about the twelve disciples, to being wise in a deceiving world. However, there are two words that are striking: authority (v1) and instructing (v5).
Authority – Jesus demonstrated His authority in previous chapters through not only His teachings but miracles. It’s this authority that ultimately delivers, heals, liberates, and brings freedom to those enslaved by sin and demonic forces. It’s an authority given to the disciples as they reach the lost sheep of Israel. It’s by no other authority that grants such power and triumph!

Instructing – this verb carries great force and authority. It’s much heavier than “teaching” which is often used to describe Jesus’ teaching. The point of instructing showcases someone of authority that is commissioning one to follow the direct orders. It’s emphatic!

In our current world, both words hold less weight than it once did for first century Jews. It’s easy to challenge and question authority and its instructions. In some cases, rightfully so if there is something questionable about whose authority and what instructions! But, this is King Jesus – Saviour of the world.

Apply

Is there an authority that has a greater voice than King Jesus? What is the Lord inviting you to take on, give up, or step into today? Remind yourself that His words are instructive and can grant great power.
