2 Timothy 3:1-9

Reflect

As Paul heads towards his conclusion of this letter that we have as 2 Timothy, he goes through a list of what it will be like in the last days. As we read through what this will look like, it’s easy to see that he’s basically listing everything that is opposite or in contrast to the Kingdom of God, and the original intent of creation. At the end of the list, he warns that we should have nothing to do with these kinds of people.

At first, that seems obvious. Why would I want to hang around people who are boastful, proud, ungrateful, slanderous, etc.? That doesn’t sound like the kind of company that I want to keep. But it’s also easy to see how some of these character qualities can slip into our communities, and even ourselves if we’re not careful.

So, I think the lesson for today is, yes, be on guard against people who choose to live their lives in these ungodly ways. But also, we should take an honest look at our own lives and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas where we’ve slid into some of these counter-Kingdom character qualities, and ask the Holy Spirit to do a work in us so that we can more fully live our lives as Kingdom people.
