Titus 3:1-8

Reflect

When I was a child, I often questioned why I was to do something, and was told “because I said so”. This was not an adequate response, but I found myself as a mother, giving this same answer.

In the book of Titus, Paul says how the Christians should behave, and then gives them the reason why they should behave that way. He teaches with great humility.

In verses 1 and 2, the behaviour should be of submissiveness, obedience, respectfulness and peacefulness towards rulers and authorities. In verse 3 we see Paul’s humility as he admits that he himself was once disobedient, enslaved by passions, envying and hating. Verses 4-8 gives the reason why our behaviour should be that of verses 1 and 2 – because of God’s kindness and love towards us which was totally undeserved, we were saved through rebirth and renewal. The Trinity is involved in our changed behaviours – God’s love is lavished on us, rebirth takes place through Jesus’ saving sacrifice, and sanctification through the Spirit. This should cause us to be excellent, good people, making our society better.

There is an old chorus composed by John W. Peterson that says: “Above all else the world needs Jesus, above all else the world needs Him.”
