Devotional Guide for Wednesday, May 22

Titus 3:9-15

Reflect

Paul brings this letter to Titus to close with some profound instructions. The letter is woven by linking faith and practice, belief and behaviour. For our devotional purposes we have divided the passages; however, today’s passage cannot be detached from yesterday’s. We must be diligent to resist the urge to be selective to only the passages that fit our pre-existing conclusions.

Today’s passage provides some very stern and necessary words. I urge us to also recognize that Paul has written extensively on the reality that we are all imperfect and in need of a culture that goes beyond treating one another fairly, but rather, treats one another with grace. Our own imperfections, as well as the other person’s are opportunities to grow in maturity and love one another. That is yesterday’s passage.

Today, Paul says there is a time to establish boundaries. For the other person’s benefit and for our own, there are times to sever a relationship. Be careful with this, as it can be a subtle shift of ungodly self-protectionism. Being caught up in a lifestyle that avoids all imperfect people will lead us to selfish isolation.

Courage and wisdom are required for these action steps.

Who do you need to approach with a desire of forgiveness and reconciliation?

Who will help you discern if a relationship is at the point of needing to end?
