Devotional Guide for Wednesday, June 5

James 5:1-6

Reflect

Ok, I suspect I might push a few buttons here. Read the passage again. However, read it as if a 20-year-old anarchist agitator is shouting it out over a crowd of idealists.

This passage hits us between the eyes as our cultural norms are exposed. We echo what the previous generation said about us as we look to the next generation and say they are privileged and entitled.

While serving in some developing countries, I’ve heard the sentiments in this passage preached from the pulpit and discussed over morning tea. Rare are the occasions that we hear similar strong words spoken about the deadly dangers of possessions.

Geographically and historically, we are the rich. We proclaim to follow Jesus who warned us about laying up our treasures in anything but His kingdom. Yet, we insist on having more.

James is confronting us with the challenge to wrestle with what we define as being rich. Though bank accounts play a role in defining wealthy, being rich has more to do with our posture and how we live out our faith through actions.

How is money hindering you from needing God?
How would you know if you have more trust in God or your financial plan? As always, I’d love to discuss with you.
