Devotional Guide for Friday, June 7

James 5:13-20

Reflect

When I first became a Christian in University, I watched and listened to sermons as my form of entertainment. There was no streaming service or social media. It was just me, my Bible, and an array of different preachers on YouTube. I came across a preacher who spoke on verse 17, and I remember my prayer life completely changing after that day.

Elijah is arguably one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament. Elijah was a man that prayed for a drought, and there was a drought; he prayed for rain, and after 3.6 years, there was rain. By demonstrating the power of the LORD, Baal’s supposed power was silenced in the face of the Israelites. Elijah prayed that fire would be sent from heaven, and there was fire from heaven. The miracles were remarkable!

It’s tempting to think that these amazing people of faith were on a different level, or possibly a superhero of some sort. But James reminds us that we are on an equal footing with Elijah (v17). This is a powerful reminder that earnest prayers of faith may lead to extraordinary outcomes! The God of Elijah is also our God.
