Devotional Guide for Saturday, June 8

1 Peter 1:1-12

Reflect

Today we turn to a short book written by the Apostle Peter in the 60’s AD. Throughout the book we receive from Peter instructions on holy living for those who are suffering persecution. In the opening section today, he talks about the tension of the security of the salvation that we have in Jesus now, and the reality that there is still grief and trials that we will experience as believers.

Throughout Scripture, it talks about salvation as (1) past - when a person first believes, (2) present – the continued process of sanctification and becoming more like Christ, and (3) future – when Christ returns and salvation is made complete. Because of this we find ourselves in the “already and not yet”. Yes, our salvation is secure through Jesus, but as we continue to live our lives here on earth, there will be times of grief and trials. But Peter tells us that this too can be a part of our sanctification, and that one day, we will experience the ultimate joy of receiving the completed goal of our faith. Is there a grief or trial that you’re facing today? Spend some time with Jesus and ask Him to help you see and be assured by the joy of your salvation.
