Devotional Guide for Tuesday, June 11

1 Peter 1:22-2:3

Reflect

I recently visited a family in hospital with their newborn baby, born 7 weeks early. This precious little one is growing stronger, but until she can nurse and express her hunger with cries for her mother’s milk, she will not be able to leave the hospital. The medical team needs to see that she is thriving and growing, not only by putting on weight, but also by her ability to express her cravings: “Mom, I’m hungry!” The baby’s desire for her mom’s milk is a clear signal for her ability to flourish.

Our passage today describes our experience in coming to faith as being “born again.” (See also John 3:1-8) In our new birth into Christ, our purification is evidenced by our obedience, and our cravings. My ability to grow up in the Lord is directly related to what I hunger and thirst for.

What if we crave something other than “pure spiritual milk”? The truth is, we crave what we expose ourselves to and feast on. Is it time to go on a diet, detoxing from the things that are allowing for malice, deceit, hypocrisy and envy to flourish? Ask the Holy Spirit if there is anything He would like you to be rid of in your life, whether a habit, a routine, an attitude, and what He would like to replace it with.
