Jeremiah 29:1-14
In our Sunday services, we are currently exploring a number of “practices” that give shape to what it means to be in right relationship with God, with one another and with our neighbours. As we consider how we might more intentionally develop relationships of godly impact with those who do not yet have a relationship with Christ, Pastor Nathanael will bring a message on a practice we’re calling “Neighbouring.”
The passage from Jeremiah offers God’s words to those who were exiled from Jerusalem to the foreign land of Babylon. It is interesting to notice that God challenged His people not to ignore or disengage from their new neighbours, even though these neighbours did not know and certainly did honour the true God. Rather, God called them to “settle down” and “seek the peace and prosperity of the city” in which they found themselves. Essentially, they were commissioned to be the kind of neighbours who would be intentional agents of God’s peace where He placed them.
